My good friend and gifted photographer Fiona went on a massive road trip with her family a few years ago. She took some amazing photos and I asked her permission to use a couple of them as reference photos for paintings.
She agreed and is now the proud owner of two of them! But I'm not done yet because I keep going back to the beautiful red dirt and bulbous clouds from her adventures in Queensland, particularly in the outskirts of Kingaroy.
Getting back into painting, I created two paintings of the same scene, just a slightly different perspective, focusing on the drama of the clouds and the vibrancy of the dirt. It's really just an excuse to use my tube of Cadmium Orange - it's the most luscious colour!
In the first painting, I stayed true to the photograph and kept the horizon in the middle of the page, capturing more of the foreground which gave me the chance to include some lovely green. It's on sale on the website here.
In the second painting, I lowered the horizon, creating an even more intense feeling of loneliness in the vast, desolate landscape. This one is also on sale on the website, here.
Which one do you prefer?
Oh, and here's the tape-peely video for satisfying viewing!
